ELIZABETH BATTON

MEZZO-SOPRANO

"Indianapolis Opera's Carmen (seen September 29) turned out to be a most rewarding performance, thanks to the excellent Carmen of Elizabeth Batton and the staging of Michael Scarola. ....

This light touch was especially appealing in Batton's Carmen. Hers was no doom-and-gloom-laden femme fatale, but one who knew what she was and what she wanted and how to have a good time getting it. Only in the final confrontation with José did she become overtly tough, taking away his knife then — in an extraordinary moment — handing it back to him, challenging him to kill her. Batton's voice is a powerhouse of dark, burnished bronze, seamless throughout its range, a steady flow of gorgeous sound."
